We live in an age of heightened awareness of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and rising concern about climate change and the effects of pollution. It is widely accepted that one of the most pernicious types of GHG emissions is carbon dioxide or CO2. The government has begun passing stricter regulations regarding CO2 emissions, while at the same time the general public itself is demanding greater environmental protection efforts from its industries. This has lead to a greater focus on carbon capture facilities and the hope they offer for our future.

What Are Carbon Capture Facilities?

Carbon capture facilities are facilities designed for carbon capture and sequestration (CCS). The “capture” part of the name refers to the removal of carbon dioxide from the gases and particulates found in fossil fuel exhaust, which is released when fossil fuels are consumed. In an industrial setting this often arises from refineries, power plants, petrochemical plants, and other industrial plants and factories. The “sequestration” refers to safely and effectively storing the carbon dioxide so that it cannot escape into the atmosphere. This is often accomplished by transporting it via pipeline and injecting it into geologic formations.

What Technologies Exist for Carbon Capture and Sequestration?

There are three primary technologies for capturing carbon:

Post-Combustion Carbon Capture – In post-combustion carbon capture the carbon is captured after the fuel has already been burned. This is typically done with a scrubber system.

Pre-Combustion Carbon Capture – Pre-combustion carbon capture systems are most commonly found in power plants which feature Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) system. This process involves oxidizing the fossil fuel before combustion in a gasifier. This products a substance called “syngas” which is composed of carbon oxides and hydrogen. The carbon can then be removed and the hydrogen burned as fuel.

Oxyfuel Combustion – Oxyfuel combustion involves burning the fossil fuels in an environment of pure oxygen rather than traditional open air. This results in emissions which are almost pure carbon dioxide and water vapor. The water vapor can be removed through a process of condensation, leaving only the carbon dioxide to be captured.
