Pipelines provide a safe, cost-efficient means of transporting natural gas. However, in order for this transport to be possible, the natural gas inside the pipeline must be kept at the correct pressure. To do this compressor stations are present at regular intervals to clean and compress the natural gas. STI Group offers provides complete compressor station construction services.
What Are Compressor Stations and How Do They Work?
Compressor stations are placed at regular intervals along a natural gas pipeline and act as stations where specialized compression equipment is housed and maintained in order to ensure that the natural gas in the pipeline is kept at a proper pressure gradient. The primary component of any compressor station is the compressor unit, which does the work of compressing natural gas to the desired PSI level for the pipeline. This often ranges anywhere from 200 psi to 1,500 psi. This wide variation in operating specs is due to the diameter of the pipeline, its elevation, and other operational factors.
The Three Most Common Types of Compressor Units
- Electric Motors with Centrifugal Compressors
- Reciprocating Engine with Reciprocating Compressor
- Turbines with Centrifugal Compressors
The compressor unit is supported by an array of other components that support the compressor are that clean and treat the gas.
Other Components of a Compressor Station
- Compressor Unit
- Filters and Scrubbers
- Compressor Skid Modularizations and Housing
- Meter and Regulators
- Gas Cooling Systems
- Launchers and Receivers
- Separation and Dehydration Facilities
