What Is ASME?

ASME is an international standards organization that was first founded in 1880 and which now sets engineering and safety standards that are used in over 100 countries worldwide. These standards are used throughout the industrial sector for engineering, construction, manufacturing, and more. ASME is headquartered in New York, NY and is a not-for-profit membership organization that strives to enrich the engineering discipline by fostering collaboration and the exchange of skills and knowledge. It is a diverse organization that includes industrial engineers, corporate executives, project managers, academic leaders, and even college students.

How Does ASME Improve Safety?

ASME improves safety by developing codes and standards, conducting research, offering continuing education courses, holding conferences, releasing regular publications, and more. The codes and standards are set by volunteers highly proficient in their fields who form committees and collaborate to create these important safety standards and codes. Companies and facilities that adhere to these standards are then eligible to earn ASME’s official stamps which demonstrate to all that the company is committed to safety.

How Did Doug Smith Earn This Award?

Doug earned the certificate of appreciation as a result of his tireless commitment to safety and by being an active participant on one of ASME’s committees, the B30 Safety Standards Committee, for over 10 years. The B30 sets safety standards for essential industrial support equipment such as hoists, slings, cranes, and jacks etc. Thus Doug has had a direct role in shaping the safety of this core industrial area.

STI Group is excited for Doug’s achievement, proud of the work he has done for ASME, and honored to have him as our Chief Safety Officer. STI Group is committed to the highest level of industrial safety practices and believes strongly in ASME’s mission. Our facilities have also earned ASME’s “U” and “S” stamps in recognition of safety and quality.
